01 / START WITH THE REAL TUBE

Replace hand-drawn curves with a measured starting point.

A pipe notching template starts with the dimensions that matter on the workbench: the outside diameter of the branch, the outside diameter of the mating tube, and the included angle between their centerlines. The calculator accepts millimeters or inches, including common fractions, and keeps the physical dimensions consistent when you switch units. That makes it practical when the tape measure, drawing, and material list do not all use the same notation.

Use the measured outside diameter rather than the nominal pipe name. With the values visible together, you can catch an unlikely size or angle before there is a line on the steel.

02 / A PAPER PATTERN THAT TRAVELS TO THE BENCH

Print the curve at full scale and keep the reference visible.

When a physical wrap is the fastest way to transfer the line, download a full-scale PDF from your pipe notching template. It supports common shop paper sizes and splits a large pattern across numbered pages. Match the page labels and paired alignment marks, join the overlap, then wrap the assembled pattern around the tube with its seam and square-end datum in view.

Before tracing, select actual size in the print dialog and measure the calibration marks. This check protects the setup from a printer setting that scaled the sheet. Download a sample A4 PDF or a sample Letter PDF to check your printer before a job.

03 / MARK WITHOUT A PRINTER

Take coordinates to the tube when paper is not the right answer.

For a large tube, an outdoor repair, or a bench without a printer, the same pipe notching template can provide a direct marking plan. Set a square end and a zero reference line, then follow the displayed circumferential and axial measurements point by point. The plan is designed to help you work from one datum instead of accumulating short measurements around the tube.

If your next step is a drawing review, a nesting layout, or an annotation in CAD, download a DXF from the pipe notching template. The export is a two-dimensional cut profile in millimeters with reference information on a separate layer. It is useful for keeping a job record beside a drawing or for preparing a flat outline before your own downstream process.

The DXF is deliberately an outline, not a machine instruction. It does not choose your cutting method, bevel, kerf, wall treatment, or weld preparation; those choices stay with your material and equipment.

What this tool covers

This pipe notching template is for centered, straight round tubes whose centerlines intersect. It lays out the outside-surface intersection for a branch end. Use the separate main-pipe tool for a closed side opening. Check your material, print scale, orientation, and fit on a test piece before a finished part.

It is not a CNC toolpath, a bevel specification, a kerf allowance, or a structural certification. Those decisions depend on the material, cutting process, joint design, and requirements of your work.

What can I make with this pipe notching template?

Use it to lay out a branch-end fishmouth or saddle cut for a centered round-tube connection. You can print the full-scale PDF, export a flat DXF outline, or follow direct marking coordinates. For a main-pipe hole or a paired set-on connection, open the Main tube opening or Joint tasks tool.

Do I need a subscription or account?

No. The current tools work without an account. Saved branch jobs stay in the browser on the device you use, so use the same browser when you want to reopen them.

Where should I begin if I have never used a wrap template?

Measure the actual outside diameters and included angle, then make a small test pattern. The guides explain how to measure the angle reference and how to print, join, wrap, and check the scale before marking your material.

  • A4: 210 × 297 mm
  • Letter: 215.9 × 279.4 mm
  • A3: 297 × 420 mm
  • Tabloid: 279.4 × 431.8 mm
